A Mill Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning, maintenance, and repair of machinery and equipment within a mill or manufacturing facility. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, conducting preventive maintenance, and performing repairs to minimize downtime and optimize production efficiency. The Mill Mechanic must possess a strong understanding of mechanical systems, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose mechanical problems in mill machinery and equipment such as conveyors, rollers, pumps, motors, gears, and other mechanical components.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks, including lubrication, inspection of belts and bearings, and replacement of worn parts to ensure equipment operates smoothly and efficiently.
  • Execute repairs and replacements of faulty or damaged parts using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Collaborate with production supervisors and operators to prioritize maintenance tasks and minimize downtime without compromising safety or quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment history, and inventory of spare parts and supplies.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working with potentially hazardous machinery, chemicals, and tools, and ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations.
  • Assist in the installation, commissioning, and testing of new equipment, ensuring proper alignment, calibration, and functionality.
  • Train and mentor junior mechanics or apprentices, sharing knowledge and best practices to develop their skills and capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements or equipment upgrades to enhance reliability, performance, and productivity.
  • Coordinate with external vendors or contractors for specialized repairs, parts procurement, or technical support as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications or vocational training in mechanical engineering, millwright, or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience as a mill mechanic or similar role in a manufacturing environment, with a strong understanding of mechanical systems and industrial machinery.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues, with hands-on experience in repairing and maintaining various types of equipment.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, including reading schematics and technical manuals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, prioritize tasks effectively, and adapt to changing production demands.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities to identify root causes of equipment failures and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams, convey technical information clearly, and provide training or guidance to others.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed, to support maintenance activities and respond to emergencies.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or elevated platforms safely.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to established safety procedures and protocols

PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS:

  • Lift up to 25-50 lbs.
  • Be available on call to troubleshoot and support the Lab and Mill for all shifts.
  • Other non-typical shifts may be required.
  • Computer use and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Must be able to mask fit and wear respirator.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather for short periods of time.
